Reflection of Microteaching: Vocabulary Teaching

I did a vocabulary teaching lesson with Kimura-san last ETM3 class. And other members of ETM3 class pretended junior high school students. Thanks for thier cooperation. I really enjoyed teaching and I hope they also enjoyed the class.
Now, I'm going to review it.

1.What we did in our lesson
First, I(JTE) and my pertner(ALT) showed students a short play in which Freddie (a leaf) and his father was talking. In the play, we tried to use the words we wanted to have students learn many times. And we tried to make it interesting. After the play, we reviewed the story and new words. Then we all practiced the new words again and again, with some variations (repeat after teachers, say together, say faster, translate from Japanese into English, etc.)
We did the whole class in English. That is because the class was special with an ALT. We wanted students to learn the words through input in the class. That would not be possible in usual class. In this respect, we used *Teaching through Inout Approach. But in the latter half of the class, we got the class to repeat in chorus and finally gave translations in repeating with flash cards. That was like *Present and Learn Approach.
*You can see the approaches here

2.What our students did during our lesson
Some students seemed to understand our play, but some didn't( Of course it was only their pretenses). But they all were willing to practice the words, and they seemed to acquire them.

3.The strenghts and weaknesses of our lesson
[Strengths]
・The play was interesting for students, even if they didn't catch every words or understand whole the play.
・Having much time to practice the words, students could memorize them.
・The class was not monotonous.
[Weaknesses]
・We didn't show the students a clear topic in the beginning of the class.
・We used long sentences in the play, so students couldn't understand it well.
・We read papers in which we had written our lines, not looking at students well.

Hello Keichan, Your class was verry funtastic! I entertained the short play and dance show. I often couldn't listen to teachers, but I understood from drawing of blackboard.
You tried to us say new words without word cards. it may be good practice, but if we knew this before the practice, we probably trioed to memorize it harder.
Your class was very nice! Good job★

Hello Keichan, I like your class very much. In your lesson, I was a student who don't like or dislike English. But, I could enjoy your class.
I have a favorite part of your lesson. That is practice of new word's pronunciation. You tried to step up the tempo of practice gradually. I think the way is very good for students.
Thank you for your lesson!

Hi Keichan, I'm Naojin.
It was a good "Input approach" because you used interesting short play and dance show through this activity, and I really enjoyed it. I think many students were interested in it. you had students repeat the words many times during the pronouncing activity, and it helped them learn the new words.
Thank you for your teaching!!

Hello Keichan!
I enjoyed your class very much.
The leaves made by you is very cute! I was drawn into your class soon by that.
I was easy to understand meaning of new words because it could find natulally through the story.
Also I think repeating new words with some variations is good way to practice and memorize it.
Thus there were many good point in your class, I think!

Hello, Keichan! This is Wakame. Thank you for your teaching. In your lesson, we could enjoy the play. I think students can expect the meaning of words by your drawing and the story. Your play was so funny and so cute. We could enjoy by looking, listening and speaking. I think you must have had done preparation elaorately.
Thank you for your good teaching. See you!

Hello, Keichan!!
Your preparation was very good. Pictures in the class was nice. Leaves can stick on the blackboard and use for short play. I found this was divised well.
But I give the weakness of the class below.
Though you did role play in English, I think many students
could'nt understand the contents. Even if university students are, it was hard to understand your English. So this class will be hard in junior high school. But your role play was parepared very well.
Your instruction was clear and easy to listen. And you seemed to be exciting. So we enjoyed, too. Thank You!!

Hello,Keichan!!I liked your class very much.
You had a short play of dancing leaves, and tried us to practice new words. That was very fantastic!I think a role play fascinates students, and they would learn earnestly. The most important things for class are to interest the students and to explain easier,I think. You did good job! But,one thing I felt was that conversation in role play might e a little difficult for the student.
Thank you for your micro teaching.I really enjoyed it.

Hello, keichan! This is Pizza.
I enjoyed your class very much! Your Freddie was so cute and using music entertained us. I think your way, teaching words in content is very effective for students to be used to listening English and guessing the meaning.
But your teaching sometimes might be difficult to understand for JHS. I think it is better to read sentences more slowly and to use gesture in order to make Input more comprehensible.
Thank you for your teaching!

Hi keichan.
It was good for your class. your visual teaching materials makes student easy to understand English. The Leaves was cute. And you acting was likea actress.
Mr.Hall said to you that you may add a hearing and gesture with materials. I agree with him. multi-teaching looks like diffecult, but If we can these way, it will quite effective to understand.

Hi!Keichan. I am karuha.
There were many interesting ideas in your lesson. By the good music and the story of ‘Freddie’, we enjoyed and were imputed the contents smoothly. Also practice of new words was not boring because of the variety methods. If you change the long sentence more understandable, the lesson will become more improve! Anyway, thanks for nice and cheerful lesson.

Your class was very interesting♪ Using music is very uniqe.
This is a good way for paying attention to teacher's story, I think.
Thank you for your lesson!!

JH さんのコメント...

Keichan,
I think the primary hinderance for students to understand your lesson was not the long sentences but the fact that you were reading the dialogue instead of speaking it and looking at the students. Overall, though, you did a great job and I hope that this was a positive learning experience for you.
